And We presented Hell and made it clear to them, so they saw it and witnessed it, away from My mention, away from My signs which they look at, so I mention with glorification. Or away from the Qur'an and contemplate its meanings and perceive them, and similar to them are deaf, mute, and blind. And they were not able to hear, meaning they had no hearing of it, except that it was more intense, because the deaf may be able to hear if called out to, and these are as if their hearing has been made deaf. [The saying 'as if their hearing has been made deaf' is in the Sahih regarding the root of the word 'samma': Allah made him deaf. And regarding the root 'sama' with an alif: I made the game deaf when I shot it and killed it, so the saying: I made deaf, perhaps means I destroyed completely so that it cannot hear. (A)] So they have no ability to hear.
