Commentary
There were three hundred and sixty idols around the Kaaba, one idol for each tribe. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The tribes of the Arabs used to pilgrimage to it and sacrifice for it. The Kaaba complained to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, saying: "O my Lord, how long will these idols be worshipped around me instead of You?" So Allah revealed to the Kaaba: "I will bring about a new event for you, and I will fill you with cheeks prostrating, who will come to you like the soft movement of the eagles, yearning for you like birds to their eggs. They will have a loud call around you in response to the call of the pilgrimage." When this verse was revealed on the Day of the Conquest, Gabriel, peace be upon him, said to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: "Take your staff and throw it down." He began to approach each idol, striking it in the eye with the staff, saying: "Truth has come, and falsehood has vanished." The idol would fall on its face until he had thrown them all down. Only the idol of Khuzā'ah remained above the Kaaba, and it was made of yellow glass. He said: "O Ali, throw it down." The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, carried it up and threw it down, breaking it. The people of Mecca were astonished and said: "We have not seen a man more magical than Muhammad." The complaint of the Kaaba and the revelation to it is a representation and an imagination. And falsehood has vanished means it has gone and perished, from their saying: "His soul has vanished," when it leaves. And the truth is Islam, and falsehood is polytheism, which was vanishing and not stable at any time.
