66Your Lord is the One who causes ships to sail for you through the sea, so that you may go in quest of His bounty; surely, He is Ever-Merciful for you. 67you face a hardship at sea, vanished are those whom you used to invoke, except Him (Allah). Then, once He brings you safe to the land, you turn away (from Him); man is so ungrateful.

Commentary

He drives and runs and explores. And the harm: the fear of drowning. Misguided are those whom you call upon except Him. All those you invoke in your calamities have departed from your illusions and thoughts except Him alone. For you do not mention anyone else, nor do you call upon anyone at that time, nor do you place your hope in His mercy, nor do you consider that anyone other than Him is capable of aiding you. Or perhaps it is meant: misguided are those whom you call upon from the deities regarding your assistance, but Allah alone is the one you hope for, exclusively. [The phrase 'but Allah alone is the one you hope for, exclusively' seems to be a repetition, and Al-Khazin omitted it in his wording. (A)]
