Commentary
That is: and a person calls upon Allah in His anger for evil upon himself, his family, and his wealth, just as he calls upon Him for good. As He said, "And if Allah were to hasten for the people the evil as He hastens for them the good." And man is hasty; he rushes to seek everything that comes to his heart and occurs to his mind, without taking the time to reflect carefully. And it is reported from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, that he gave Suda bint Zam'a a captive. He began to moan at night, so she asked him: What is wrong with you? He complained of the pain of the [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:qad] leg. She loosened his bindings, and when she fell asleep, he took out his hand and escaped. When the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, woke up, he called for him and was informed of the matter. He said, "O Allah, cut off her hands." Suda raised her hands expecting the response, and that Allah would cut off her hands. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "I asked Allah to place my curse and my supplication upon one who does not deserve it from my family, as I am a human who becomes angry just as humans become angry. So let Suda lower her hands." It is possible that he means by 'man' the disbeliever, who calls for punishment in mockery and hastens it, just as he calls for good when hardship touches him. And man is hasty: this means that the punishment is certainly coming to him, so what is this hastiness? And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them: it is Al-Nadr ibn Al-Harith who said: O Allah, if this is the truth from You, then respond to him, so his neck was struck down in execution.
