Commentary
If you say: Who is included in the mention of both male and female? What is the meaning of clarifying it by them? I say: It is ambiguous and applicable in general to both types. However, when mentioned, the apparent meaning is that it includes males. Thus, it was said 'from male or female' for clarification, so that the promise encompasses both types entirely, a good life, meaning in this world, which is the apparent meaning. This is due to His saying: 'And We will surely give them their reward from Allah,' the reward of this world and the Hereafter, as His saying: 'So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the best reward of the Hereafter.' This is because the believer, with good deeds, whether he is affluent or in need, lives a good life if he is affluent; there is no dispute about it. If he is in need, he has what makes his life good, which is contentment and satisfaction with Allah's decree. As for the wicked, their situation is the opposite: if they are in need, there is no issue with their situation. If they are affluent, greed prevents them from enjoying their life. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: the good life is lawful provision. And from Al-Hasan: it is contentment. And from Qatadah: it means in Paradise. It was said: it is the sweetness of obedience and success in his heart.
