Commentary
A witness against them from themselves means their Prophet, because He sends Prophets from among them. And We have brought you, O Muhammad, as a witness against these, against your nation, as a clear explanation. It is similar to 'Tebyan' in the breaking of its beginning. Al-Zajjaj has permitted its opening in contexts other than the Qur'an. If you say: How was the Qur'an a clear explanation for everything? I say: The meaning is that it clarifies everything concerning the matters of religion, as it is explicit about some and refers to the Sunnah, where it commands following the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and obeying him. And it was said: And he does not speak from desire. And it encourages consensus in His saying: And follows other than the way of the believers. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, approved for his nation to follow his companions and to emulate their traces in his saying: My companions are like stars; by which of them you follow, you will be guided. This was narrated by Al-Daraqutni in Al-Mu'talif from the narration of Salam bin Sulaim from Al-Harith bin Ghassan from Al-A'mash from Abu Sufyan from Jabir, raised to the Prophet. And Salam is weak. It was also narrated in Gharayb Malik from the path of Hamid bin Zaid from Malik from Ja'far bin Muhammad from his father from Jabir in the midst of a narration: And in it, 'By which saying of my companions you took, you will be guided; indeed, my companions are like stars; whoever takes from any of them is guided.' And he said: It is not established from Malik. And its narrators below Malik are unknown. It was narrated by Abd bin Hamid and Al-Daraqutni in Al-Fada'il from the hadith of Hamza Al-Hariri from Nafi' from Ibn Umar. And Hamza was accused of fabrication. It was narrated by Al-Qudai in Musnad Al-Shihab from the hadith of Abu Huraira, and in it is Ja'far bin Abdul Wahid Al-Hashimi, and they have declared him a liar. It was narrated by Ibn Tahir from the narration of Bashar bin Al-Husayn from Al-Zubair bin Adi from Anas. And Bashar was also accused. It was also brought out by Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Madkhal from the narration of Juwaybir from Al-Dahhak from Ibn Abbas, and Juwaybir is abandoned. And from the narration of Juwaybir also from Hawaab bin Abdullah, raised, and it is interrupted. Al-Bayhaqi said this text is famous and all its chains are weak. It was also narrated in Al-Madkhal from Umar, raised: 'I asked my Lord about what my companions disagree on after me. So it was revealed to me: O Muhammad, your companions are with Me like the stars in the sky; some are brighter than others. Whoever takes something from what they differ in is guided.' And in its chain is Abdul Rahim bin Zaid Al-Sahmi, and he is abandoned. They have exerted themselves and drawn analogies and paved the ways of analogy and exertion, so the Sunnah, consensus, analogy, and exertion are based on the clarification of the Book. Therefore, it was a clear explanation for everything.
