Commentary
From what He created of trees and other forms of shade, [He made] aknan, which is the plural of kinn, meaning what one seeks refuge in from houses carved in mountains, caves, and hollows. Sarabeel are the shirts and garments made of wool and linen. [Mawlid said: "They are the shirts and garments made of wool and linen and others... etc." Ahmad said: It means among the Arabs, especially the cotton of Hijaz, who are the original in this discourse.] And cotton and others protect you from the heat; He did not mention the cold, because protection from heat is more important to them. They rarely concern themselves with the cold as it is slight and bearable. It was said: What protects from heat also protects from cold. [He returned to his words. He said: "And it was said that what protects from heat protects from cold, so the mention of it indicates this." Ahmad said: The first is more apparent. Do you not see the emphasis on the blessing of the shades that protect from the midday sun, in His saying: 'He made for you from what He created shades'? This indicates that the most important thing to the addressees is protection from heat, so Allah bestowed upon them His greatest blessings in a manner significant to them. And the saying of the one who said: 'What protects from heat also protects from cold' is supported by common knowledge, for what protects from heat are the thin and fine shirts, and that is not for enduring the cold. Rather, if a person were to wear the clothing of one season—heat or cold—during the other, he would be considered heavy.]] So the mention of heat indicates the cold. And sarabeel protect you from your battles, meaning armor and joushan. [[The term 'joushan' in the dictionaries: the joushan is the chest. The joushan is the armor. (A)]] And the sarabeel is general, applying to everything made of iron and others. So that you may submit, meaning you look into His abundant blessings and believe in Him and submit to Him. And it was read: 'tuslimoon', from safety: meaning you thank and thus you are safe from punishment. Or your hearts may be safe from polytheism. It was said: you are safe from wounds by wearing armor.
