Commentary
It is read 'ummāhatikum' with the hamzah pronounced and with it broken, and the hā' is added in 'ummāt', just as it is added in 'arāq', so it is said: 'ahrāq'. Its addition is exceptional in the singular. It was said: 'My mother is Khindif and Elias is my father.' [Indeed, in battle, the collar is loose... determined in the charge, of high lineage.] 'My mother is Khindif and Elias is my father.' This refers to Qusayy ibn Kilāb ibn Murrah, the grandfather of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. 'The collar is loose' means broad-chested and open-minded. The collar originally refers to a mountain on the chest of the mount that prevents the journey from being delayed, and it is used here by association. 'Determined' means resolute. 'The charge' means enduring and confronting hardship. The addition of the hā' in 'ummāh' is exceptional. 'Khindif', with the khā' and dāl broken, is the name of Elias ibn Mudar's wife, and this is her title, while her name is Laylā. 'Khindafah' means a gait similar to a quick walk. The use of 'mother' and 'father' to refer to grandmother and grandfather is a metaphor for pure origin. You do not know anything' is in the position of a state. Its meaning is: not knowing anything of the right of the benefactor who created you in the wombs, and fashioned you, then brought you from constriction to abundance. And His saying 'and He made for you' means: 'What He instilled in you of these things is only tools for removing the ignorance you were born with and acquiring knowledge and acting upon it, in gratitude to the benefactor and in worship of Him, and fulfilling His rights, and advancing to what brings you happiness.' 'And the hearts' is in the plural of 'heart', like 'the crows' in 'crow', and it is one of the few plural forms that take the form of the many, and the few if nothing else is intended in the hearing, just as 'shasū' is used in the plural of 'shas' and nothing else, thus it took that course.
