And to Allah belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. This means that He alone has knowledge of what is hidden in them from the servants, and its knowledge is concealed from them. Or it is meant by the unseen of the heavens and the earth: the Day of Resurrection, noting that His knowledge is hidden from the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth. No one among them has been informed of it except like the glance of an eye or it is nearer. This means it is with Allah, even if it seems distant, as you say about something you consider near: it is like the glance of an eye or it is nearer, when you exaggerate in considering it near.

And similar to His saying: 'And they urge you to hasten the punishment, and Allah will not fail in His promise. And indeed, a Day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count.' This means it is near to Him, while it is distant for you. It was said: the meaning is that the establishment of the Hour, the death of the living, and the resurrection of the dead from the first and the last will occur in the nearest time and the quickest. Indeed, Allah is capable of all things; He is able to establish the Hour and resurrect the creation, for it is among the things that can be done. Then He indicated His power with what follows.
