From among yourselves, of your kind. It was said: It is the creation of Hawwa from the rib of Adam. And the term 'hufad' is the plural of 'hafid', which refers to one who hurries in obedience and service. From it is the saying of the obedient: 'And to You we strive and hasten.' And he said: 'The hufad of the young ones among them, and they were left in the hands of the women.' [He says, 'Hafad' from the root of 'darb', meaning to hurry. 'Al-walā'id' is the plural of 'walīdah', which means a young girl. 'Baynahunna' means among the elderly women. 'Aslamat' is in the passive form, meaning left in the hands of the women and young girls. 'Azamat al-ajmāl' is the plural of 'zimām', and this indicates their protection and preservation, so that only the young girls intermingle with them.] And there is a difference of opinion regarding them. It was said: They are the sisters to the daughters. [The saying 'it was said they are the sisters to the daughters' in the authentic texts: 'hufad' means assistants and servants. It is also said: 'al-khabn' with a movement, refers to anyone related to the woman, such as the father and brother, and they are the sisters, as is the case among the Arabs. As for the common people, a 'khatn' is the husband of the daughter. Perhaps it also includes in the term 'sisters' the meaning of assistants or successors, so it is counted among them. In Al-Khazin from Ibn Mas'ud: 'hufad' are the sisters of a man to his daughters.] And it was said: The children of the children. And it was said: The children of the woman from the first husband. And it was said: The meaning is that He made for you 'hufad', meaning servants who hasten in your interests and assist you. It is also possible that 'hufad' refers to the sons themselves, as in His saying: 'Sakran wa rizqan hasanan', as if it were said: 'And He made for you from them children who are sons and who are hufad', meaning combining both matters of the good things, wanting some of them, because all good things are in Paradise, and the good things of this world are but a sample of them. Do they believe in falsehood, which is what they believe regarding the benefit of idols and their blessings and intercession? It is nothing but a false illusion that they have not reached by any proof or indication, so they have no faith except in it, as if it were something known and certain. And the blessing of Allah that is seen and witnessed, which has no doubt in it for one with intellect and discernment: they are disbelievers in it and deny it, just as one denies the impossible that cannot be conceived by minds. And it was said: The falsehood is what the devil has made lawful for them, such as the prohibition of the 'bihirah' and 'sa'ibah' and others. And the blessing of Allah is what He has made lawful for them.
