It was read: 'by the splitting of souls', with the 'sh' being broken and opened. And it was said: they are two dialects in the meaning of hardship, and there is a difference between them:

The opened form is a source of splitting the matter upon him, and its reality returns to the split which is the crack.

As for the split, it means half, as if half of his strength goes away due to the effort he endures. If you say: what is the meaning of His saying: 'You would not have reached it', as if they were at a time enduring hardships in reaching it until the camels carried their burdens. I say:

Its meaning is that you endured your burdens to a land you would not have reached in estimation if the camels had not been created except by the effort of your souls, not that they were not truly able to reach it. If you say: how does His saying: 'You would not have reached it' correspond to His saying:

'And carry your burdens'? Why not say: you would not have been carrying them to it? [[Mahamud said: 'If you say how does His saying you would not have reached it correspond to His saying and carry your burdens ... etc.'? Ahmad said:

It is possible that the meaning is that you carry your burdens to a land you would not have reached by them except by the splitting of souls, and it suffices to mention reaching without mentioning carrying them because it is customary that the traveler does not do without the burdens he carries. The first meaning is higher, and Allah knows best.]]? I say: Its correspondence is from the perspective that its meaning is:

'And carry your burdens to a distant land you know that you would not reach by yourselves except with effort and hardship, let alone carry your burdens on your backs.' And it is possible that the meaning is: you would not have reached it except by the splitting of souls. And it was said:

Your burdens are your bodies. And from Ikrimah: the land is Mecca, for He is Most Kind and Most Merciful, where He has mercy upon you by creating these carriers and facilitating these means.
