Commentary
If you say: What does his saying وَمِنْ ثَمَراتِ النَّخِيلِ وَالْأَعْنَابِ relate to? I say: It relates to something omitted, its meaning being: And We provide you with the fruits of the date palms and the grapes, that is: from their juice, and it was omitted because the phrase نسقيكم before it indicates it. And the saying تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنْهُ سَكَراً is a clarification and revelation of the essence of the watering. Or it may relate to تَتَّخِذُونَ, and مِنْهُ is a repetition of the circumstance for emphasis, like saying: Zayd is in the house, in it. And it is possible that تَتَّخِذُونَ is an adjective of a noun omitted, like his saying: ... Its meaning is: And from the fruits of the date palms and the grapes, a fruit you take as a sweetener and good sustenance, because they eat some of it and take some of it as sugar. If you say: To what does the pronoun in مِنْهُ return if you consider it a repeated circumstance? I say: To the omitted addition which is the juice, just as it returned in the saying of Allah تعالى أَوْ هُمْ قائِلُونَ to the omitted family, and السكر is wine, named from the source of سكر سكراً and سكرًا. Like رشد رشداً ورشداً. He said: وَجَاؤُنَا بهم سَكَرٌ عَلَيْنَا ... فَأَجْلَى اليَوْمُ وَالسَّكْرَانُ صَاحِى [[تقدم شرح هذا الشاهد بهذا الجزء ص 395 فراجعه إن شئت اه مصححه.]] And there are two opinions regarding it: One is that it has been abrogated. Among those who said it was abrogated are Al-Sha'bi and Al-Nakha'i. The second is that it combines both reproach and favor. It is said that السكر is the fermented drink, which is the juice of grapes and raisins and dates when it is cooked until two-thirds of it evaporates, then it is left until it ferments, and it is permissible according to Abu Hanifa up to the limit of intoxication, and he uses this verse and the saying of the Prophet ﷺ "Wine is forbidden in itself and intoxication is from every drink" [[Reported by Al-Nasa'i from the hadith of Ibn Abbas may Allah be pleased with both of them as a raised narration. It was narrated by Al-Aqili from another source from Ali as a raised narration. In it is Muhammad ibn Al-Furat Al-Kufi, who is weak in hadith.]] and by many reports. Indeed, our master Abu Ali Al-Jubai may Allah sanctify his soul authored a book on the permissibility of fermented drinks, and when he aged [[The phrase "when he aged and took on the high age" in the dictionaries: a man ages, he ages with a movement, and he ages. (A)]] and reached a high age, he was told: If you drank from it what would strengthen you, he refused. It was said to him: But you authored on its permissibility, he said: I took it for debauchery [[The phrase "he said I took it for debauchery" in the dictionaries: debauchery is immorality and filth. (A)]] so it became ugly in manliness. And it is said that السكر is the taste [[The phrase "and it is said that السكر is the taste" in the dictionaries: the taste is with a damma: food. (A)]] And he recited: جَعَلْتُ أَعْرَاضَ الكِرَامِ سَكَرَا meaning I moved with their honor [[The phrase "meaning I moved with their honor" in the dictionaries: moving with a damma is what is moved by drink. (A)]]. And it is said to be from wine, and that if it spreads [[The phrase "and that if it spreads" in the dictionaries: it spreads, meaning it hastens in running. (A)]] among the honor of people, it is as if it becomes intoxicated by it. And the good sustenance is vinegar, syrup, dates, raisins, and others. And it is possible that السكر is considered good sustenance, as if it were said: You take from it what is sugar and good sustenance.
