Commentary
And they assign to Allah what they dislike for themselves, from daughters and partners in their leadership, and they belittle His messengers. [Mahamud said: "What is meant by what they dislike are daughters, partners in their leadership, and belittling His messengers... etc." Ahmad said: "The opposite of these are those who, if they like something from their wealth, they dedicate it to Allah. Rather, if they love a servant, they free her, and if they desire food presented to them, they give it as charity to their beloved. This is only reported from the righteous predecessors among the companions, like Ibn Umar and his peers and those who followed them in this. They assign to Allah what they desire. O Allah, if we do not attain the rank of Your allies, grant us their love, for whoever loves a people will be resurrected with them."] And they take lightly His messages. And they assign to Him the worst of their wealth, while for their idols they assign the best of it. And their tongues describe that they have the best reward with Allah, as in His saying: "And if I return to my Lord, indeed I have for Him the best." And it was said by some to a wealthy man: "How will you be on the Day of Resurrection when Allah says: 'Bring what you gave to the rulers and their supporters,' and they will bring forth the animals and garments and types of luxurious wealth? And when He says: 'Bring what you gave to Me,' they will bring forth the broken and torn and worthless. Do you not feel ashamed of that moment?" And he recited this verse.
And from Mujahid: "The best reward for them is the saying of Quraysh: 'We have sons,' and that they have the best reward is a replacement for the lie.
And the word 'lie' was read in the plural form, as a description of the tongues. 'Mufratun' was read with an open or a broken 'ra', lightly or with emphasis. The open form means those who are brought forward to the Fire, hastened to it, as in the saying: 'I brought him forward.' And it was said to mean forgotten and abandoned, as in the saying: 'I left him behind and forgot him.'
And the broken form, lightly, refers to excess in sins. And the emphasized form refers to negligence in acts of obedience and what is required of them.
