Then he mentioned the stubbornness of Quraysh and the Prophet's ﷺ eagerness for their faith. He made it known that they are of a group upon whom misguidance has been decreed. He does not guide whom He leads astray, meaning He does not show kindness to those whom He forsakes, for that is futile. And Allah, the Most High, is exalted above futility, for it is among the vile acts that are not permissible for Him. And it has been recited: 'He does not guide' [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: la yahdi], meaning: you cannot guide him nor can anyone else guide him, as Allah has forsaken him. And His saying: 'And they have no helpers' is evidence that the intended meaning of misguidance is forsakenness, which is the opposite of support. It is also possible that 'He does not guide' means 'He is not guided.' It is said: 'Allah guided him, so he was guided.' And in the recitation of Ubayy: 'Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is led astray, nor one who leads astray' [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: fa inna Allaha la hadi liman yudl], which supports the reading of 'He does not guide' in the passive form. And in the recitation of Abdullah: 'He guides,' with the merging of the 't' in 'is guided,' which supports the first reading. And it has been recited 'leads astray' with an open vowel. And Al-Nakha'i recited: 'If you strive,' with an open 'r,' which is a dialectal form.
