Commentary
The foundations: the pillars of the building which it relies upon. It was said: the basis. This is a metaphor, meaning: they have leveled structures to deceive Allah and His Messenger. So Allah made their destruction in those structures, like the case of a people who built a building and supported it with pillars. Then the building came down from the pillars, causing the roof to collapse on them and they perished. An example of this is: whoever digs a pit for his brother, he will fall into it himself. It was said: this refers to Nimrod ibn Canaan when he built the tower in Babylon, its height being five thousand cubits. Some say it was two farsakhs. Then Allah sent the wind, which caused it to collapse upon him and his people, and they perished. The meaning of Allah's coming is the coming of His command from the foundations in a way they do not perceive and do not expect. It has been recited: So Allah came to their house. The roof collapsed upon them, humiliating them with a punishment of disgrace. Our Lord, indeed, whoever You admit to the Fire, You have humiliated him. This refers to them in this world, then the punishment in the Hereafter. My partners, in reference to Himself, narrating their association, to rebuke them in a mocking manner. You oppose them, meaning you oppose and dispute with the believers regarding them and their meaning. It has been recited: You oppose, with a kasra on the noon, meaning: you oppose me, because opposing the believers is as if it is opposing Allah. Those who were given knowledge said: they are the prophets and the scholars from their nations who used to call them to faith and advise them, yet they do not pay attention to them and are arrogant towards them and oppose them. They say this in glee over them, and Allah has narrated this from their words to be a kindness to those who hear it. It was said: they are the angels. It has been recited: He takes them, with a ta and ya. It has been recited: those whom He took, with the ta merged into the ta. Then they submitted and became peaceful, and they came with what was contrary to what they were upon in the world of opposition and arrogance. They said: We did not do any evil and denied what was found among them of disbelief and aggression. The knowledgeable ones responded to them: Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of what you used to do, and He will reward you for it. This is also from the glee. Likewise: So enter the gates of Hell.
