Commentary
In 'He sends down' and 'We sent it down,' and what is in both of them from the sending down gradually according to events and interests: this indicates that alteration is a matter of interests like sending down, and that leaving abrogation is like sending it down all at once in its departure from wisdom. And the Spirit of Holiness is Gabriel, peace be upon him. It is attributed to holiness, which is purity, as it is said: Hatem of generosity and Zayd of goodness. The intended meaning is the holy spirit, and Hatem the generous, and Zayd the good. And the holy one is the purified from sins. It has been read with a pronounced 'd' and with it being silent in the position of a state, meaning He sent it down intertwined with wisdom. This means that abrogation is among the truths to establish those who have believed, to test them with abrogation, until when they say about it: it is the truth from our Lord and wisdom, He judges for them with steadfastness and sound certainty and tranquility of hearts, on the basis that Allah is Wise and does not act except with what is wisdom and correctness, and guidance and good tidings, which are two objects of the verb, connected to the position of 'to establish.' The estimation is: establishing them and guiding and giving good tidings, and in it is an implication of the occurrence of opposites of these qualities for others. And it has been read: 'to establish,' with a lighter pronunciation.
