Commentary
For you is related to the saying 'He has sent down', or to a drink, as news for it. And the drink is what is drunk. Trees refer to the trees that are tended by livestock. In the narration of Ikrimah: Do not eat the price of trees, for it is unlawful. [Reported by Abu Ubaid in the conditions from him as a statement. And he added something similar. And 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated from the path of Wahb ibn Munabbih who said, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Beware of unlawful earnings.' They asked: 'What is unlawful?' He said: 'The sale of trees, the price of wine, and the rental of a sodomite slave.'] It refers to the pasture. You let them graze, as the livestock grazes, so it is grazing, and its owner lets it graze. This is from the word 'sama', which is the mark, because it leaves marks in the ground by grazing. And it is read: 'yambitu', with the 'ya' and 'nun'. If you say: Why was it said 'and of all fruits'? I say: Because all fruits can only be in Paradise. However, some of all of it has been made to grow on earth for remembrance, so that they may reflect and derive evidence from it regarding Him, His power, and His wisdom. And the verse is a clear indication. And some of them said: 'yambitu', with emphasis. And Ubayy ibn Ka'b read: 'He causes the crops, olives, date palms, and grapes to grow for you', in the nominative.
