Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder in response to their denial and mockery. [Mahamud said: "This is a response to their denial and mockery... etc."] Ahmad said: It is possible that it means to preserve it from that which would disgrace it, such as contradictions and differences that are not absent from the fabricated speech. This is also evidence that it is from Allah, as He said in another verse: 'And if it had been from other than Allah, they would have found in it much contradiction.' In their saying: 'O you to whom the Reminder has been sent,' He said: 'Indeed, We,' thus emphasizing that He is the One who sent it definitively and certainly. He is the One who sent it with Gabriel to Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and there were watchers before him and behind him, until it was sent down and reached, preserved from the devils, and He is its Preserver at all times from any addition, reduction, distortion, or alteration, unlike the previous books, for He did not take it upon Himself to preserve them. Rather, He entrusted their preservation to the rabbis and scholars, and they differed among themselves out of envy, so distortion occurred. The Quran was not left to anyone else's preservation. If you say: Since His saying 'Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder' is a response to their denial and mockery, how is it connected to His saying 'And indeed, We will preserve it'? I say: This has been made a proof that it is sent down from Him as a verse, because if it were from the words of humans or not a verse, it would be subject to addition and reduction as every other speech is. It is said that the pronoun in 'to Him' refers to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, as in His saying: 'And Allah will protect you.'
