Commentary
That is: do not aspire with your sight to the aspiration of one who desires it and wishes for it to what We have granted to some of them, kinds of disbelievers. If you say: how does this connect with what came before? [Mahamud said: "If you say how does this connect with what came before... etc.?" Ahmad said: "And this is the correct meaning of the hadith, and many scholars have interpreted it as referring to singing. These claim that 'taghanna' is derived from the extended form of 'ghina' and not from the restricted form, and that its action is specifically to be self-sufficient. However, I have found the construction of 'taghanna' from the restricted form in the authentic hadith regarding horses. As for the one that is a covering, it is a man who tied it out of self-sufficiency and abstinence. This is certainly from the restricted form, and it is agreed upon, and it is a source of 'ta'anni', which indicates that it is used from both constructions contrary to the claim of the opponent. Allah is the Grantor of success."] I said: He says to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: You have been given the greatest blessing, which every blessing, no matter how great, is insignificant and small in comparison to it, and that is the great Qur'an. So you should be self-sufficient with it and do not extend your eyes to the pleasures of this world. And from it is the hadith: "There is no one of us who does not sing with the Qur'an." [It was narrated by al-Bukhari through Abu Salamah from Abu Hurairah, and in the chapter from Sa'd and Abu Lubabah in Abu Dawood. The compiler mentioned that al-Nawawi was confused, and before him al-Mudhari, then al-Taybi attributed it to Abu Dawood and did not attribute it to al-Bukhari, and al-Qurtubi erred in attributing it to Muslim and not to al-Bukhari. The author of al-Jami' al-Usul did not mention it, and al-Hakim attributed it to the two shaykhs, and what is in the two authentic books is the hadith of Abu Hurairah: "Allah has not permitted anything as He has permitted a Prophet to sing with the Qur'an and to raise his voice with it." "Benefit" Al-Bayhaqi said in the Sunan in the Book of Testimonies: Al-Hakim informed us from Abu al-Asamm, I heard al-Rabi' say: I heard al-Shafi'i say: There is no one of us who does not sing with the Qur'an. A man said to him: Does he mean to be self-sufficient? He said: This is not its meaning, rather its meaning is to recite it with sorrow.] And the hadith of Abu Bakr: "Whoever is given the Qur'an and sees that someone has been given better than what he has been given from this world, he has belittled what is great and magnified what is small." [I did not find it from Abu Bakr, and it was narrated by Ibn Adi in the biography of Hamzah al-Nasibi from Zayd ibn Rafi' from Abu Ubaidah from Ibn Mas'ud, raised: "Whoever learns the Qur'an and thinks that someone is richer than him has belittled what is great and magnified what is small," and Hamzah was accused of fabrication. It was narrated by Ishaq and al-Tabari from the hadith of Abdullah ibn Umar with the wording: "Whoever is given the Qur'an and sees that someone has been given better than what he has been given has magnified what Allah has made small and belittled what Allah has made great - the hadith."] It was said: Seven caravans arrived from Busra and Adhri'at belonging to the Jews of Banu Qurayzah and al-Nadir, containing various types of goods, fine clothing, jewels, and other belongings. The Muslims said: If this wealth were ours, we would be strengthened by it and would spend it in the way of Allah. So Allah, the Exalted and Mighty, said to them: I have given you seven verses that are better than these seven caravans. And do not grieve for them, meaning do not wish for their wealth nor grieve for them that they did not believe so that Islam may be strengthened by their place and the believers may thrive with them. And be humble to those with you from the poor believers and the weak, and be content with the faith of the rich and the strong. And say to them: Indeed, I am the clear warner, warning you with clarity and proof that the punishment of Allah is descending upon you.
