Commentary
And We are the inheritors, meaning the remaining ones after the destruction of all creation. It was said that the remaining one is called 'inheritor' as a metaphor from the inheritor of the deceased, because he remains after their demise. From this is the saying of the Prophet ﷺ in his supplication, 'And make him the inheritor among us.' It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, al-Bazzar, and al-Hakim from the hadith of Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rise from a gathering, he would invoke these supplications: O Allah, allocate for us from Your fear...' and in it, 'And make him the inheritor among us.' Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a good hadith, and al-Bazzar said: Abdullah ibn Rawahah is unique in this. It is a weak hadith. It was narrated from Habib ibn Abi Thabit from Urwah from Aisha that he ﷺ would say: 'O Allah, grant me health in my body, and grant me health in my eyesight, and make him the inheritor of me.' Abu Ya'la also narrated it, and in al-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim from the hadith of Abu Huraira, he said: 'The supplication of the Prophet ﷺ was: O Allah, grant me enjoyment in my hearing and my eyesight, and make them the inheritors of me.' And in al-Tabarani and al-Awsat from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would invoke - and he mentioned something similar.' And We have certainly known those who have preceded in birth and death, and those who have come after from the first and the last. Or from those who have emerged from the loins of men and those who have not yet emerged. Or from those who have advanced in Islam and hastened to obedience and those who have delayed. It was said: the advanced ones in the ranks of the congregation and the delayed ones. It was narrated that a beautiful woman was among the worshippers behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so some of the people would advance so that they would not see her, while some would delay to catch a glimpse of her. Then this verse was revealed. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim, Abu Ya'la, Ahmad, al-Bazzar, al-Tabari, and Ibn Abi Hatim from the narration of Abu al-Jawza, Aws ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas. He said: 'There was a beautiful woman, one of the most beautiful people, praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some of the people would advance to be in the first row so that they would not see her or some would delay to be in the last row. When they would bow, they would look from under their armpit. Then Allah revealed this verse.' Al-Bazzar said: 'We do not know of any narration from Ibn Abbas except this one.' Al-Tirmidhi said: 'It was narrated from Abu al-Jawza as a disconnected narration, and it is more likely.' He gathers them, meaning He alone is capable of gathering them, and is aware of their gathering despite the overwhelming number of them and the distance of their parts. Indeed, He is Wise and Knowing, possessing profound wisdom and vast knowledge, doing all that He does in accordance with wisdom and correctness, and He has encompassed knowledge of all things.
