Commentary

Indeed, we are only human beings like you. This is a concession to their saying, and that they are humans like them. They mean that they are like them in humanity alone. As for what is beyond that, they were not like them. However, they did not mention their virtue out of humility, and they limited themselves to saying: But Allah bestows His favor upon whom He wills of His servants with prophethood. This is because He knows that He does not grant them that honor except that they are worthy of being chosen for it, due to characteristics in them that they have been singled out for over their kind, except by the permission of Allah. They intended that bringing the sign you proposed is not up to us nor within our ability, and it is only a matter that relates to the will of Allah. And upon Allah, let the believers put their trust. This is a command from them to all the believers to rely on Allah. They meant by it themselves primarily and commanded themselves with it, as if they said: It is our right to rely on Allah in being patient with your opposition and enmity and what occurs to us from you. Do you not see His saying: And what is the reason for us not to rely on Allah? Its meaning is: And what excuse do we have for not relying on Him, while He has guided us? He has done for us what necessitates our reliance on Him, which is the success in guiding each one of us to the path that he must follow in religion. If you say: How is the command to rely repeated? [Mahamud said: 'If you say how is this repeated after His saying: And upon Allah, let the believers put their trust... etc.'] Ahmad said: And by this, it is distinguished from the valley of 'Whoever kills a person, his spoils are his.' And Allah knows best. I say: The first is for initiating reliance, and His saying: Let those who rely put their trust means: Let those who have initiated their reliance remain steadfast in what they have newly begun in their reliance and their intention towards themselves as previously mentioned.
