Commentary
And if you are astonished, O Muhammad, by their saying in denial of resurrection, then their saying is indeed astonishing and worthy of astonishment. For whoever is capable of creating what He has enumerated to you of the great creations and did not tire in creating them, then the resurrection is the easiest thing for Him. Thus, their denial is a wonder among wonders. As for their last saying: it may be in the nominative case as a substitute for their saying, or it may be in the accusative case due to the saying. And if it is in the accusative case, it is indicated by His saying: 'Indeed, we are in a new creation.' Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord. Those are the complete ones, persistent in their disbelief. And those are the shackles in their necks, described by persistence, as His saying: 'Indeed, We have placed shackles in their necks.' And similar to it: 'They have shackles and chains.' The path of misguidance is a metaphor for what they are upon of vile conditions. And the shackle is what the hand is tied to the neck with, and the chain is for the legs. Both are metaphors for heedlessness and following one's own desires. He says: They have taken the path of whims and left the path of guidance. Or it is part of the warning.
