Commentary
( [Medinan, and it is said] there is disagreement about it, and it consists of forty-three verses [revealed after Surah Muhammad] ) 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful'
That refers to the verses of the surah. What is meant by the Book is the surah, meaning: those verses are the verses of the complete, wondrous surah in its category. Then it said: AND WHAT HAS BEEN REVEALED TO YOU from the entire Quran is the TRUTH that there is no more than it, not just this surah alone. In the style of this speech is the saying of the Anmari: they are like a ring [[The saying 'the Anmari are like a ring' means in their offspring. (A)]] that is branched, no one knows where its ends are? It intends the complete.
