Commentary
The harm of thinness from hardship and hunger is something that is pushed away, rejected by every trader out of desire for it and disdain for it. It is called 'mazjat' when you push it away and drive it off. The wind drives the clouds. It is said that it was from the belongings of the Bedouins, wool and fat. It is said to be pine and green grains. It is said to be the flour of barley and dried curds.
It is said to be counterfeit dirhams that are accepted only at a discount. So fulfill for us the measure that is our right, and give us charity and favor us by overlooking the poor quality of the goods, or increase us beyond our right. They called it what is extra and an increase that does not require charity, because charity is prohibited for the prophets. It is said that it was permissible for others than our prophet. Ibn Uyaynah was asked about this and he said: Did you not hear 'and give us charity'? He meant that it was lawful for them.
It appears that they humbled themselves before him and asked him to give them charity. Then he felt compassion for them, and mercy overtook him, so he could not help but introduce himself to them. And His saying 'Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable' is evidence for that, for He mentioned Allah and His reward. And charity is the gift sought for reward from Allah. From this is the saying of Al-Hasan to one who heard him say: O Allah, give charity to me: 'Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, does not give charity; rather, it is the one who seeks reward that gives charity. Say: O Allah, give me, or favor me, or have mercy on me.
