Commentary
Al-Bath: The most difficult grief that its owner cannot endure, so he spreads it to the people, meaning he disseminates it. From it: Batha amruhu, and abatha iyahu. And the meaning of 'Innama ashku' is: I do not complain to anyone of you or others, I only complain to my Lord, calling upon Him and seeking refuge in Him. So leave me with my complaint. This is the meaning of turning away from them, meaning he turned away from them to Allah and complained to Him. It is said that a neighbor of Jacob came to him and said: O Jacob, you have become worn out and aged, reaching the age your father reached! He said: My weariness and aging are due to what Allah has tested me with regarding the grief of Joseph. So Allah revealed to him: O Jacob, do you complain to My creation? He said: O my Lord, I made a mistake, so forgive me. So He forgave him. After that, whenever he was asked, he would say: I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah. It is narrated that it was revealed to Jacob: I found fault with you because you slaughtered a sheep and a poor man stood at your door, and you did not feed him. And the most beloved of My creation to Me are the prophets, then the poor. So prepare food and invite the poor to it. It is said that he bought a maid with her child, and he sold her child, and she wept until she became blind. 'I know from Allah what you do not know' means: I know from His creation, mercy, and good opinion of Him that He will bring me relief from where I do not expect. It is narrated that he saw the Angel of Death in his dream and asked him: Have you taken the soul of Joseph? He said, No, by Allah, he is alive, so seek him. Al-Hasan read: 'Wa huzni' with two fathas. And 'Huzni' with two dammas: Qatadah.
