A brother of his wanted [to accuse] Yusuf. It is narrated that when they extracted the measure from the pack of Benjamin, his brothers lowered their heads in shame. They approached him and said: What have you done? You have exposed us and darkened our faces. O son of Rachel, we still have trouble from you. When did you take this measure? He said: The sons of Rachel, who still have trouble from you, you took my brother and destroyed him. This measure was placed in my pack, which contained the goods in your packs.

There is a difference regarding what they attributed to Yusuf concerning theft. It is said that he took a statue of his grandfather, his mother's father, in his childhood, broke it, and threw it among the carcasses on the road. It is said that he entered a church and took a small statue of gold that they used to worship, then buried it. It is said that there was a goat or a chicken in the house, and he gave it to a beggar. It is said that there was a belt of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, which was inherited by the great ones of his children. It was inherited by Isaac, then it passed to his daughter, who was the eldest of his children. She nursed Yusuf—she was his aunt—after the death of his mother, and she could not be patient without him. When he grew up, Jacob wanted to take him away from her. She took the belt and tied it around Yusuf under his clothes and said: I have lost the belt of Isaac, so look for who took it. They found it tied around Yusuf. She said: It is mine; I will do with it what I wish. Jacob left him with her until she died. He concealed it with an implication regarding the interpretation. The interpretation is: 'You are the worst in place,' and it was feminized because his saying 'You are the worst in place' is a sentence or a word, as they named the group of speech a word. It is as if it was said: So he concealed the sentence or the word which is his saying 'You are the worst in place,' and the meaning is: He said to himself: You are the worst in place, because his saying 'You are the worst in place' is a substitute for what he concealed. In the reading of Ibn Mas'ud: 'So he concealed it,' in the masculine, meaning the saying or the words. The meaning of 'the worst in place' is that you are the worst in status regarding theft, because you are thieves in truth, for your theft of the judgment from your father. And Allah knows best what you describe, knowing that no theft has been established for me or for my brother, and the matter is not as you describe.
