Commentary
So he began with their containers. It was said: He told those who were in charge of them: There must be an inspection of your containers. So he took them to Yusuf, and he began inspecting their containers before the container of Benjamin to eliminate suspicion until he reached his container and said: I do not think this one took anything. They said: By Allah, you will not leave him until you look in his saddlebag, for it is better for your soul and our souls. So they extracted it from him. Al-Hasan read: the container of his brother, with a dammed waw, and that is a dialect. And Sa'id ibn Jubair read: the container of his brother, by turning the waw into a hamzah. If you say: Why did he mention the pronoun of the cup multiple times and then feminize it? I say: They said he returned to the feminine because of the drinking vessel, or he feminized the cup because it can be masculine or feminine. And perhaps Yusuf called it a drinking vessel while his servants called it cups. For it occurred in what relates to him in speech as a drinking vessel, and in what relates to them from it as cups. Likewise, we plotted such a great plot, we plotted for Yusuf, meaning we taught him it and revealed it to him. He would not take his brother in the religion of the king. This is an explanation of the plot and clarification of it, because it was in the religion of the king of Egypt. And what he ruled regarding the thief was that he should compensate twice what he took, not that he should be obligated and enslaved unless Allah wills. That is, he would take it only by the will of Allah and His permission in it. We raise the degrees of whom We will in knowledge, as We raised the degree of Yusuf in it. And it was read: he raises with a ya. And degrees with tanween. And above every possessor of knowledge is one who is knowing. Above him is one who has a higher degree in his knowledge, or above all the scholars is the All-Knowing, who is Allah, the Exalted and Almighty. If you say: What Allah has permitted must be good, then from what aspect is this plot good? And it is nothing but slander and theft of one who did not steal, and a denial of one who did not deny, as in His saying: Indeed, you are thieves. So what is his punishment if you are lying? I say: It is in the form of slander but not slander in reality, because His saying: Indeed, you are thieves is a metaphor for what occurred that resembled theft from their actions towards Yusuf. And it was said: That saying was from the caller, not from Yusuf. And His saying: If you are lying is a condition for the negation of their innocence. And the condition of denial is not a denial, on the condition that if he had stated to them the denial as he stated to them the theft, it would have had a reason, because they were lying in their saying: And we left Yusuf with our belongings, and the wolf ate him. This and the ruling of this plot is like the legal tricks by which one reaches religious benefits and advantages, as Allah, peace be upon him, said to Ayyub: And take in your hand a bunch of grass to free yourself from your oath and not break it, and as Ibrahim said: She is my sister, to be safe from the hand of the disbeliever. And all the laws are nothing but benefits and ways to avoid falling into evils. And Allah, the Exalted, knew in this trick that He taught Yusuf great benefits, so He made it a means and a way to them, and it was good and beautiful, and the aspects of ugliness were removed from it as we mentioned.
