Commentary
Did I trust you with him? He means that you said about Yusuf, 'And indeed, we will surely protect him,' just as you said about his brother. Then you betrayed your guarantee, so what can assure me from something like that? Then he said, 'And Allah is the best Protector,' so rely upon Allah in it and handed him over to them. 'And Protector' is a distinguishing term, like your saying: 'He is the best of them as a man,' and 'May Allah bless him as a knight.' It is also permissible for it to be an adjective.
And it was read as 'Hifzan' and Al-A'mash read: 'So Allah is the best Protector.' And Abu Huraira read: 'The best of Protectors, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.' So I hope that He will bestow upon me His protection and not combine upon me two calamities.
