Commentary
Make me in charge of the treasures of the earth. Indeed, I am a protector, knowledgeable. I am trustworthy in preserving what you entrust to me, knowledgeable about the ways of management. He described himself with trustworthiness and sufficiency, which are sought by kings from those they appoint. He said this to facilitate the implementation of Allah's commands, the establishment of truth, the spread of justice, and the ability to achieve that for which the prophets are sent to the servants. He knew that no one but him could fulfill that role, so he sought the appointment for the sake of Allah, not out of love for kingship or the world. And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: 'May Allah have mercy on my brother Yusuf. If he had not said, "
," he would have been appointed immediately, but he delayed that.' This is a narration from Al-Thalabi from Ibn Abbas through the narration of Ishaq ibn Bishr from Juwaybir from Al-Dahhak from him, and this chain is weak. If you say: How is it permissible for someone to take a position from the hand of a disbeliever and be subordinate to him and under his command and obedience? I say: Mujahid narrated that he had embraced Islam. And according to Qatadah, this indicates that it is permissible for a person to take a position from the hand of a tyrannical ruler, and the predecessors used to take judicial positions from the oppressors and saw it as acceptable. If the Prophet or a scholar knows that there is no way to rule by Allah's command and to repel injustice except by empowering a disbelieving or corrupt king, then he may seek support from him. It is said that the king would act according to his own opinion and would not be opposed in everything he saw, so he was in the position of a follower and obedient to him.
