Commentary
That they make him a direct object. This is agreed upon from your saying: the matter is gathered and resolved, so gather your matter.
And it was recited: in the depths of the pit. It was said that it is a well in Bayt al-Maqdis. It was said: in the land of Jordan. It was said: between Egypt and Midian. It was said: three farsakhs from the dwelling of Jacob. And the answer to "when" is omitted. Its meaning is: they did to him what they did of harm. It has been narrated that when they brought him out to the wilderness, they showed him enmity and began to mock him and beat him. Whenever he sought help from one of them, he was only met with humiliation and beating, until they nearly killed him. So he kept crying: O my father, if you knew what the sons of the maidservants are doing to your son. Then Judah said: Did you not give me a pledge that you would not kill him? When they intended to throw him into the pit, he clung to their clothes, so they tore them from his hands. He clung to the wall of the well, so they tied his hands and stripped him of his shirt. He said: O my brothers, return my shirt to me so that I may cover myself. They only stripped it off to stain it with blood and deceive their father. They said to him: Call upon the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars to comfort you, and they threw him into the well. When he reached halfway down, they threw him to die. There was water in the well, so he fell into it. Then he found a rock and stood on it while he was crying. They called to him, and he thought that mercy had reached them, so he answered them. They intended to strike him to kill him, but Judah prevented them. Judah would bring him food. It is narrated that when Ibrahim, peace be upon him, was thrown into the fire and stripped of his clothes, Gabriel brought him a shirt made of silk from Paradise and dressed him in it. Ibrahim gave it to Isaac, and Isaac gave it to Jacob, who placed it as an amulet around Joseph's neck. Then Gabriel came and took it out and dressed him in it. And We inspired him. It was said that he was inspired in his childhood as Yahya and Isa were inspired. It was said that he was then mature. And from al-Hasan: he was seventeen years old. You will certainly inform them of their affair. This was inspired to him to comfort him in the darkness and loneliness, and to give him glad tidings of what his affair would lead to. Its meaning is: you will be freed from what you are in, and you will inform your brothers of what they did to you while they do not realize that you are Joseph due to the greatness of your status and the pride of your sovereignty, and the long time that has changed forms and appearances. This is because when they entered upon him, disputing, he recognized them while they were unknown to him. He called for the cup and placed it in his hand, then he tapped it and said: This cup informs me that you had a brother from your father named Joseph, and that you took him away and threw him into the depths of the pit, and you told your father: A wolf devoured him, and you sold him for a cheap price. And it is possible that the phrase "while they do not realize" relates to the saying "and We inspired" as we comforted him with inspiration and removed the loneliness from his heart, while they do not realize this and think that he is troubled and lonely with no one to comfort him. And it was recited: We will inform them, with the 'nun' as a threat to them. And the phrase "while they do not realize" is related only to "We inspired."
