Commentary
What is the matter with you that you do not feel secure with us? It has been recited by showing the two nuns, and by merging them with a slight indication and without indication. And: 'Taymuna' is with a kasra on the ta with merging. The meaning is: Why do you not trust us regarding him while we want good for him, love him, and feel compassion for him? And what we have shown from our side in this regard does not indicate anything contrary to advice and affection. They intended by this, when they resolved to plot against Yusuf, to lead him away from his opinion and to bring him back under their protection. This indicates that he sensed from them what necessitated that he should not feel secure with them. 'Yarta'a' means to graze freely in eating fruits and others. The root of 'rat'a' is fertility and abundance. It has been recited: 'Narta'a', from 'irtā'a' (to graze). It has also been recited: 'yarta'a' and 'yal'ab', with a ya, and 'yarta'a', from 'artā'a' (to graze one's livestock). Al-'Ala ibn Sayyabah read: 'yarta'a' with a kasra on the 'ain, and 'yal'ab', with a raised form as a beginning. If you say: How could it be permissible for Jacob, peace be upon him, to allow them to play? I say: Their play was racing and practicing with weapons, to prepare themselves for fighting the enemy, not for amusement, as evidenced by his saying: 'Indeed, we have gone to race.' They called it play because of its appearance.
