Commentary
That is a reference to what has preceded from the news of Yusuf, and the address is to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and its place is at the beginning. And His saying, 'Of the news of the unseen, We reveal to you,' is the news of indeed. It may also be a relative pronoun meaning 'which,' and 'of the news of the unseen' is its connection, and 'We reveal to you' is the news. The meaning is that this news is unseen, which you have not received except through revelation, because you were not present with the sons of Yaqub when they conspired to throw their brother into the well, as His saying goes, 'And they conspired to put him in the depths of the well.' This is a mockery of the Quraysh and those who denied him, for it was not hidden from any of the deniers that he was not among the bearers of this story and its like, nor did he meet anyone in it or hear from him. He was not aware of his people. So when he informed them and narrated this amazing story that overwhelmed its bearers and narrators, there was no doubt that it was not from him and that it was from revelation. So when they denied it, he mocked them. And it was said to them: 'You have certainly known, O deniers, that he was not a witness to those who passed from the previous nations.' And similar to this is His saying, 'And you were not by the western side when We decreed to Musa the command, while they were plotting against Yusuf and seeking to bring about his downfall.'
