Commentary
And He has provided me from Him, meaning from Him, with a good provision, which is what He has granted me of prophethood and wisdom. It is said that a good provision is lawful and pure, without any loss or cheating. If you say: Where is the answer to 'Have you seen?' and why has it not been established as it was established in the story of Noah and Lot? I say: Its answer is omitted, and it was not established because its establishment in the two stories indicated its place, and the meaning of the speech calls for it. The meaning is: Inform me if I am on clear evidence and certainty from my Lord and I am truly a prophet, is it right for me not to command you to abandon the worship of idols and to refrain from sins? And the prophets are only sent for that purpose? It is said: So-and-so has opposed me to such and such: if he intended it while you were turning away from it, and he opposed me from it if he turned away from it while you were intending it. And a man meets you coming away from water, and you ask him about his companion? He says: He has opposed me to the water, meaning that he has gone to it while I am going away from it. From this is the saying of Allah, and I do not intend to oppose you to what I have forbidden you from, meaning to precede you to your desires that I have forbidden you from, to take them for myself without you. I only intend to reform you with my advice and my command for good and my prohibition of evil as much as I am able. It means: the duration of my ability. [Mahamud said: 'As much as I am able' means the duration of my ability to reform, and as long as I am capable of it. It may also be that it is on the assumption of an omitted addition, meaning except for the reform of what I am able to, or it may be an object for the source like the saying: 'Weak in harming his enemies.' Ahmad said: And it appears that it is a duration, as in the saying: 'Fear Allah as much as you are able.' As for making it an object for the source and it has been defined by the definite article, it is far-fetched, because employing the defined source in a clear object is not that common. They said: And there is no instance in the Qur'an of a worker in a clear object or otherwise except in the saying: 'Allah does not love the public mention of evil.' So it worked in the neighbor and the deviation from the completion of the grammar to its need is possible, especially in the most eloquent speech. And Allah knows best.] for reform, and as long as I am capable of it, I do not spare any effort in it. Or it may be a substitute for reform, meaning: the amount that I am able to do of it. And it may be on the assumption of an omitted addition as you say: except for the reform of what I am able to. Or it may be an object for it like the saying: 'Weak in harming his enemies.' [Weak in harming his enemies... he thinks fleeing prolongs the term due to his cowardice.] Meaning: I do not intend except to reform what I am able to reform of your corruption. And my success is only by Allah, and my being successful in achieving the truth in what I bring and leave, and its occurrence in accordance with the pleasure of Allah is only by His assistance and support. The meaning is that he sought his Lord's assistance in carrying out the matter according to its laws, and he asked Him for support and victory over his enemy, and within it is a threat to the disbelievers and a cutting off of their hopes in him.
