He stood in the form he usually takes and spread his wing - and he has two wings and upon them is a sash of woven pearls, and he is dazzling in his beauty. He struck their faces with his wing, and their eyes were blinded, as Allah, the Most High, said: 'So We blinded their eyes.' They became unable to find the way. They went out saying: 'Escape, escape! For in Lot's house there are sorcerers; they will never reach you.' This is a clarification of the previous statement, for if they are the messengers of Allah, they would not reach him and would not be able to harm him. It has been recited: 'So travel by night' with both connection and disconnection. And 'except your wife' can be read in the nominative or accusative. It has been narrated that he asked them: 'When is the time of their destruction?' They said: 'In the morning.' He said: 'I want it to be sooner than that.' They said: 'Is not the morning near?' The word 'morning' has been recited with two dhammas. If you ask: What is the reason for the reading of 'except your wife' in the accusative? I say: It is an exception from his words 'So travel with your family,' and the evidence for this is the reading of Abdullah: 'So travel with your family by part of the night except your wife.' It is also possible that it is in the accusative due to the original meaning of exception, although the more eloquent form is the substitution, meaning the reading of those who read it in the nominative, as it is substituted for one of them. There are two narrations regarding her being taken out with his family: It has been narrated that he took her out with them and ordered that none of them should look back except her. When she heard the sound of the punishment, she looked back and said: 'O my people!' A stone caught up with her and killed her. It has also been narrated that he was commanded to leave her with her people, for her heart was with them, so he did not take her with him. The difference in the readings is due to the difference in the narrations.
