Commentary
Their brother, one of them, and its position is for conjunction with 'We sent Noah.' And Hud is an appositive. And 'other than him' in the nominative: an adjective on the position of the genitive. And it was read: 'other than him' in the genitive as an adjective to the word 'you are nothing but fabricators.' You fabricate lies against Allah by taking idols as partners for Him. There is no messenger except that he faced his people with this saying, because their matter is advice, and advice is not purified nor made pure except by cutting off desires. As long as something of it is imagined, it does not succeed nor benefit. Do you not understand when you reject the advice of one who seeks no reward for it except from Allah? And that is the reward of the Hereafter, and nothing is more dismissive of suspicion than that. It was said: 'Seek forgiveness from your Lord and believe in Him, then repent to Him' from worshiping others, because repentance is not valid except after faith. And 'the abundant' means much flow, like 'the abundant rain.' And he intended to win them over to faith and encourage them in it by the abundance of rain and increase of strength, because the people were owners of crops, gardens, and buildings, guarding them with the utmost diligence, so they were most in need of water. And they were proud of what they had of great strength, might, and valor, being fortified by it against the enemy, and they were awe-inspiring in every direction. And it was said: he meant strength in wealth. And it was said: strength in marriage. And it was said: the rain was withheld from them for three years and the wombs of their women were barren. And from Al-Hasan ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he visited Muawiya, and when he left, some of his attendants followed him and said: I am a man of wealth and I have no children, teach me something that perhaps Allah will grant me a child. He said: 'You should seek forgiveness.' So he would frequently seek forgiveness until he would sometimes seek forgiveness seven hundred times in one day, and he was granted ten sons. When this reached Muawiya, he said: Why did he not ask him from what he said that? So he sent another delegation, and the man asked him, and he said: 'Did you not hear the saying of Hud, peace be upon him, 'And He will increase you in strength to your strength,' and the saying of Noah, peace be upon him, 'And He will provide you with wealth and children.' And do not turn away nor disregard me and what I invite you to and encourage you in, as criminals insisting on your crimes and sins.
