Commentary
Is he who is upon clear proof [like him who does not]? It means: Is he who seeks the worldly life like he who is upon clear proof? [[The saying of Al-Nasafi: Like he who seeks ... etc. (A)]] That is, they do not succeed them in rank, nor do they come close to them. He means that there is a great difference and a clear distinction between the two groups. He intended by them those who believed among the Jews, like Abdullah ibn Salam and others, who were upon clear proof from their Lord, meaning with evidence from Allah and a statement that the religion of Islam is true, and it is a proof of reason. And it is followed by a witness from Him, meaning a witness that testifies to its truth, which is the Qur'an from Him, from Allah, or a witness from the Qur'an. It has been mentioned previously. And before it, the Book of Musa, which is the Torah, meaning: And that proof is also followed by the Book of Musa before the Qur'an. And it was read: the Book of Musa in the accusative, meaning: he was upon clear proof from his Lord, which is the evidence that the Qur'an is true. And it is followed by: and he reads the Qur'an, a witness from Him, a witness from those who were upon clear proof, like the saying: And a witness from the Children of Israel testified to its like. Say: Sufficient is Allah as a witness between me and you, and he who has knowledge of the Book. And before it, the Book of Musa, and it follows from before the Qur'an and the Torah, an Imam, a Book which is entrusted in religion, a guide in it, and a great mercy and blessing upon those to whom it was sent. Those are meant by being upon clear proof, they believe in it, they believe in the Qur'an. And whoever disbelieves in it from the factions, meaning the people of Mecca and those who allied with them against the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, then the Fire is his appointed place. So do not be in doubt. And it was read: Muriyah, with a Dhamma, and both are doubt, from it, from the Qur'an or from the appointed time.
