Commentary
If you say: What is the reason for the plural address after the singular, which is His saying: 'To you, so know' after His saying: 'Say'? I say: Its meaning is: If they do not respond to you and to the believers, because the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and the believers were challenging them. And He said in another place: 'So if they do not respond to you, then know.' It may be that the plural is for the glorification of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, as in His saying: 'If I wish, I can make unlawful the women except for you.' [The explanation of this evidence is mentioned in the first part, page 294, so refer to it if you wish. This is the corrector's note.] Another reason is that the address is to the polytheists, and the pronoun in 'So if they do not respond' refers to those whom you call upon besides Allah to assist against opposing Him, due to their knowledge of their inability to do so, and that their power is too limited to reach it. So know that what has been revealed is by the knowledge of Allah, meaning it has been revealed intertwined with what only Allah knows, of an astonishing arrangement for creation, and news of the unseen to which they have no access. And know at that time that there is no deity except Allah alone, and that His oneness is obligatory, and associating partners with Him is a great injustice. So are you Muslims, pledging allegiance to Islam after this decisive argument? This is a good and consistent meaning. And for those who consider the address to be for the Muslims, its meaning is: So remain steadfast in the knowledge you possess and increase in certainty and steadfastness that it is revealed from Allah and in the oneness of Him. And the meaning of 'So are you Muslims?' is: Are you sincere?
