So be steadfast as you have been commanded. Be steadfast in a manner like the steadfastness that you have been commanded with, on the path of truth, without deviating from it. And whoever repents with you is connected to the implied subject in 'be steadfast.' It is permissible to connect it without a separate confirmation due to the standing of the intervening phrase in its place. The meaning is: So be steadfast yourself, and let those who have repented from disbelief and believed with you be steadfast. And do not transgress or go beyond the limits of Allah. Indeed, He is All-Seer of what you do, and He knows, so He will reward you for it. So fear Him. Ibn Abbas said: No verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, in all of the Qur'an that was harsher or more difficult for him than this verse. For this reason, he said: 'Hud has made me gray, and Al-Waqi'a and their sisters.' In Al-Tirmidhi from the narration of Shayban from Abu Ishaq from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas, Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have become gray.' He said: 'Hud has made me gray, Al-Waqi'a, Al-Mursalat, and 'Am yatasa'aloon. And when the sun is folded up.' And it was said that it is strange. Al-Bazzar narrated it from this chain. He said: There was disagreement regarding it from Abu Ishaq. Shayban said thus. And Ali ibn Salih said: From Abu Ishaq from Abu Hujayra, and Zakarriya said from Abu Ishaq from Masruq that Abu Bakr said. Al-Daraqutni elaborated on mentioning its defects and the differences in its chains at the beginning of his book on defects. Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in Al-Dala'il from the narration of Atiyya ibn Sa'id. Umar ibn Al-Khattab said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the gray hair has hastened to you.' He said: 'Hud and its sisters have made me gray: Al-Waqi'a, 'Am yatasa'aloon, and when the sun is folded up.' It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd and Ibn 'Adi from the narration of Yazid Al-Raqashi from Anas. In it are 'Al-Waqi'a, Al-Qari'a, and 'Idha Al-Shams Kuwirat.' It was narrated that his companions said to him: 'The gray hair has hastened in you.' He said: 'Hud has made me gray.' And some of them said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, in a dream, and I said to him: It has been narrated from you that you said: Hud has made me gray.' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'What made you gray from it? The stories of the prophets and the destruction of nations?' He said: 'No, but His saying: So be steadfast as you have been commanded.' And from Ja'far Al-Sadiq, may Allah be pleased with him, he said regarding 'So be steadfast as you have been commanded': 'Rely on Allah with a sound determination.'
