It is read on the day it comes without a 'ya'. And similar is their saying: 'I do not know', as reported by Al-Khalil and Sibawayh. The omission of the 'ya' and the sufficiency of the kasrah is common in the language of Hudhayl. If you say: What is the subject of 'comes'? I say: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, as in His saying: 'Are they waiting except for Allah to come to them, or your Lord to come?' And 'Your Lord has come', and it is supported by the reading: 'And what delays it', with the 'ya'. And His saying: 'By His permission'. It is also possible that the subject is the pronoun for the day, as in His saying: 'Or the Hour comes to them'. If you say: By what is the adverbial phrase made to stand? I say: It either stands without a subject, or by implying 'remember', or by the omitted ending in His saying: 'Except for a fixed term', meaning the term ends on the day it comes. If you say: If you make the subject the pronoun for the day, then you have made the day a time for the coming of the day and defined the thing by itself. I say: The intended meaning is the coming of it and its hardships; do not speak, as it is similar to His saying: 'They do not speak except for whom the Most Merciful has permitted'. If you say: How can this be reconciled with His saying: 'On the day every soul will argue for itself' and His saying: 'This is a day when they will not speak and they will not be permitted to make excuses'? I say: That is a long day with positions and places; in some of them they argue for themselves, and in others they refrain from speaking and are not permitted, and in others they are permitted to speak, and in others their mouths are sealed, and their hands speak, and their feet bear witness. So among them, the pronoun refers to the people of the standing, and they are not mentioned, because that is known, and because His saying: 'No soul speaks' indicates it. And it has been previously mentioned regarding the people in His saying: 'The people are gathered for it', and the wretched one who has deserved the Fire for his evil deeds, and the happy one who has deserved Paradise for his good deeds.
