Commentary

If you have believed in Allah, and you have affirmed Him and His signs, then rely upon Him. To Him, entrust your affairs for protection from Pharaoh. Then it is conditioned in reliance that they submit themselves to Allah, meaning they make themselves safe and pure for Him, with no share for the devil in it. This is because reliance cannot occur with mixing. An example in speech is: If Zayd strikes you, then strike him, if you have strength. They said, 'Upon Allah we have relied,' only because the people were sincere. There is no doubt that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, accepted their reliance, answered their supplication, saved them, and destroyed those they feared. He made them successors in His land. So whoever wants to be prepared for reliance upon his Lord and to entrust himself to Him, should reject mixing in favor of sincerity. Do not make us a trial for them, meaning: a punishment that they may punish us with and lead us away from our religion. Or a trial for them, where they may be led astray by us and say: If these were upon the truth, they would not have been afflicted.
