Commentary
And they ask you and inquire of you, saying, "Is it true?" This is a question posed in denial and mockery. Al-A'mash read: "Is it true?" This is more indicative of mockery, as it implies a suggestion that it is false. This is because the 'lam' indicates a type, as if it is said: "Is it the truth and not falsehood?" Or is it that which you have called the truth, and the pronoun refers to the promised punishment. And 'I' means 'yes' specifically in the oath, just as 'hal' means 'has' in the question specifically. I have heard them say in affirmation: 'Iwa,' connecting it with the 'wa' of the oath and not pronouncing it alone. And you are not able to escape the punishment, which is certainly not rightfully yours.
