Commentary
So to Us is their return. The answer to 'We will cause you to die' and the answer to 'We will show you' is omitted, as if it were said: 'Either We will show you some of what We promise them in this world, or We will cause you to die before We show it to you, so We will show it to you in the Hereafter.' If you say: 'Allah is a witness to what they do in both abodes,' what is the meaning of 'then'? I say: The testimony is mentioned, and what is meant is its implication and result, which is punishment, as if it were said: 'Then Allah punishes for what they do.' Ibn Abi Abla read: 'then' with a fathah, meaning 'there.' It may also be intended that Allah will fulfill His testimony regarding their actions on the Day of Resurrection, when their skins, tongues, hands, and feet will speak as witnesses against them.
