And this Qur'an was not fabricated from other than Allah, but it was a confirmation of that which is before it, which are the previous revealed books. It is miraculous beyond them, so it serves as a measure against them and a witness to their truthfulness. As His saying, "It is the truth confirming what is before it." And it is recited: "but it is a confirmation of that which is before it" and the detailing of the Book, as: "But it is a confirmation and detailing." And the meaning of "And this Qur'an was not to be fabricated" is that it is true and upright. It is impossible for something like it, in the greatness of its matter and its miraculous nature, to be fabricated. And the detailing of the Book and the clarification of what has been written and mandated from the rulings and laws, from His saying, "The Book of Allah is upon you." If you say: What is the connection of His saying, "There is no doubt in it from the Lord of the worlds?" I say: It is included in the scope of the clarification. As if He said: But it was a confirmation and detailing free from doubt, being from the Lord of the worlds. And it may be intended: But it was a confirmation from the Lord of the worlds and a detailing from Him, with no doubt in that. So "from the Lord of the worlds" is related to confirmation and detailing, or "there is no doubt in it" is an interruption, as you say: Zayd, there is no doubt he is generous. Or do they say, "He fabricated it?" Rather, do they say, "He invented it?" The hamzah (in 'He fabricated it') is for the purpose of affirming the proof against them, or a denial of their saying and a rejection. The meanings are close. Say: If the matter is as you claim, then bring you forth with a fabricated chapter like it. For you are equal to me in Arabic and eloquence. And the meaning of "with a chapter like it" is that it is similar to it in eloquence and good arrangement. And it is recited: "with a chapter like it," in the addition, meaning: with a chapter of a book like it. And call upon other than Allah whom you are able from His creation to assist you in bringing forth something like it, meaning: that Allah alone is capable of bringing forth something like it; no one else is able to do that. So do not seek assistance from Him alone, then seek assistance from all those beneath Him if you are truthful that it is fabricated. Rather, they denied it; they hastened to deny the Qur'an and confronted it at the moment of hearing before they understood it and knew its essence, and before they contemplated it and grasped its interpretation and meanings. This was due to their extreme aversion to what contradicts their religion and their fleeing from abandoning the religion of their forefathers, like one raised on imitation from the literalists. When he senses a word that does not agree with what he was raised upon and accustomed to - even if it is clearer than the sun in its truthfulness and clarity - he denies it at first glance and recoils from it before he perceives it with his hearing without thinking about its correctness or corruption, because his heart feels only the correctness of his doctrine and the corruption of any other doctrines. If you say: What is the meaning of the expectation in His saying, "And when its interpretation comes to them?" I say: Its meaning is that they denied it at first glance before contemplation and knowledge of its interpretation. [Mahamud said: "Its meaning is that they denied it at first glance before contemplation and knowledge of its interpretation ... etc." Ahmad said: And the denial before comprehending its knowledge might imply an excuse for the denier, so the word 'when' came to indicate that they had comprehended its knowledge until their excuses are cut off and their misery is confirmed. And Allah knows best.] They denied it out of imitation of their forefathers. And they denied it after contemplation, in rebellion and obstinacy. So He reproached them for hastening to deny it before knowledge of it, and He used the word of expectation to indicate that they knew after its high status and miraculous nature when the challenge was repeated upon them, and they tested their capabilities in opposition and were certain of their inability to produce something like it. They denied it out of spite and envy. Likewise, that denial was like the denial of those before them, meaning before considering the miracles of the prophets and before contemplating them without fairness from themselves, but they imitated their forefathers and were obstinate.
And it is said: It is about those who lied and are in doubt. It is permissible that the meaning of 'And when its interpretation has not come to them' is that its interpretation regarding the news of the unseen has not yet come to them, meaning its outcome, until it becomes clear to them whether it is a lie or the truth. This means that it is a miraculous book from two aspects: from the aspect of the miracle of its composition, and from the aspect of what it contains of the news of the unseen. They hastened to deny it before they looked into its composition and reached the limit of its miracle, and before they were informed of its news of the unseen and its truthfulness or falsehood. And among them are those who believe in it, who affirm it within themselves, and know that it is true, but they oppose it by denying it. And among them are those who doubt it and do not believe in it, or it may refer to the future, meaning: And among them are those who will believe in it and among them are those who will persist. And your Lord knows best the corruptors among the opposers or the persistent.
