They were angered by what was in the Qur'an regarding the condemnation of idol worship and the warning to the polytheists. So they said, 'Bring us another Qur'an that does not contain what angers us, or replace it with a verse of mercy instead of a verse of punishment, and remove the mention of the deities and the condemnation of their worship.' He was commanded to respond to the suggestion of alteration, for it falls within the power of man. It is possible to replace a verse of punishment with a verse of mercy from what has been revealed, and to remove the mention of the deities. As for bringing another Qur'an, that is not within the capability of man. It is not for me to say what is not rightfully mine, as His saying goes: 'It is not for me to say what is not rightfully mine.' I cannot change it of my own accord. It has been recited with the 'ta' opened: 'without my Lord commanding me to do so.' I follow only what is revealed to me; I do not bring forth or omit anything like that, except by following the revelation of Allah and His commands. If a verse is abrogated, I follow the abrogation, and if a verse is replaced by another verse, I follow the replacement. It is not for me to change or abrogate. Indeed, I fear that if I disobey my Lord by changing or abrogating on my own, I would face the punishment of a great day.
