It has been narrated that when this was revealed, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, gathered the Ansar and said, "You will find after me favoritism, so be patient until you meet me." [This was mentioned by Al-Thalabi from Anas without a chain. The mentioned story is agreed upon from the hadith of Abdullah bin Zaid in the midst of a narration, and from the hadith of As'id bin Hudhayr, which does not mention that the verse was the cause of that, but its cause was the distribution of the spoils of Hunayn.]" He means that I was commanded in this verse to be patient with what the disbelievers inflicted upon me, so I was patient; so you too be patient with what the unjust leaders inflict upon you. What prevents you from receiving me? He said: We did not have any mounts. Muawiyah said: Where are the camels? Abu Qatadah said: We slaughtered them in search of you and your father on the day of Badr. Then Abu Qatadah said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: Indeed, you will see after me favoritism. Muawiyah said: What did he command you? He said: He commanded us to be patient until we meet him. He said: So be patient until you meet him. Abdul Rahman bin Hassan said when this reached him - and he mentioned the two verses.
