O people, O people of Mecca, if you are in doubt about my religion and its correctness and soundness, this is my religion, so listen to its description. Present it to your minds and look at it with an eye of fairness, so that you may know that it is a religion in which there is no room for doubt. I do not worship the stones that you worship besides Him who is your God and your Creator. Rather, I worship Allah, who takes your souls. He described Himself as the One who takes souls to show them that He is the one who should be feared and revered, and worshiped instead of that which cannot do anything. And I have been commanded to be among the believers, meaning that Allah commanded me to do so, by what He has instilled in me of reason and by what He has revealed to me in His Book. It is said that its meaning is: If you are in doubt about my religion and what I am upon—whether I should remain steadfast upon it or abandon it and agree with you—do not entertain thoughts of impossibility and do not doubt my matter. Cut off the desires of your ambitions, and know that I do not worship those whom you worship besides Allah, nor do I choose misguidance over guidance, as He said, 'Say, O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship.' I have been commanded to be, its origin is: to be, so the preposition was omitted. This omission may be from the common omission, which is the omission of prepositions with 'if' and 'that'. And it may be from the uncommon omission, as in the saying: 'I commanded you to do good, so declare what you are commanded.'
