Commentary
And it is not for any soul, meaning from the souls that it is known will believe, except by the permission of Allah, that is, by His facilitation, which is granting kindness. And He places the wickedness upon those who do not understand. The permission is met with wickedness, which is abandonment. [The saying 'which is abandonment' interprets wickedness as abandonment according to the doctrine of the Mu'tazila. According to the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah, there is no need for interpretation.] And the soul known for its belief is among those who do not understand, which are those who persist in disbelief, as His saying: 'Deaf, dumb, and blind, so they do not understand.' And abandonment is called wickedness, which is punishment because it is its cause. And it has been recited as 'the wickedness' with a zay. And it has been recited as 'and We place' with a noon.
